An IP Security Camera Guideline
Written by Samuel Blue
On the constantly growing market of home security cameras, the analog devices, surprisingly for many, continue to be present in most residences. This is partly because owners do not want to spend more money on upgrades and partly because the general lack of knowledge that most people have in regard to new technologies. However, in the near future the situation is expected to change, with most owners getting full digital video surveillance systems, as the costs will eventually reach more affordable values and as the old devices will simply not be able to keep up with all the functions introduced in newer models.

If you happen to be the owner of an analog security camera that has done an excellent job in monitoring your house for many years now, but that considers that the time for a change has finally come, then here you will find more about the new technologies currently available.

When it comes to buying a new security camera, the option in these days is rather simple: either a full IP device or one that is only partially IP. The last option becomes available by using some special encoders that attempt to convert a classic analog signal into one that can be used via the internet. However, many disadvantages are associated with this practice, leaving the full IP camera as the recommended choice.

A look at IP security camera´s main specifications

Covering all the specifications of new IP security cameras would be an impossible task, as they are changing all the time, and differ greatly from one manufacturer to the other. Still, there are some basic specifications that should always be regarded when buying a new IP security camera.

  • Firstly, the field of view is extremely important. Most new cameras offer a 240 degree field of view, which in most situations proves to be more than enough. The zoom capability is closely associated with the field of view, and generally tends to be around 150 yards for most cameras. More advanced devices can provide complete a 360 degree view, yet their cost generally tends to be rather high.
  • The bandwidth comes next in line in terms of importance. For a home system rarely any problems will be associated with it, but in the cases were many individual security cameras are forming a system together, bandwidth is essential. This specification should never be taken lightly by those that want a quality surveillance camera.
  • When it comes to camera resolution, no compromise should ever be made. Resolution handles the quality of the images taken. More means better, but also more means more money. However, if a camera does not have a good resolution, then it can ruin the surveillance with images that are simply not good enough.

Getting a really good product

Remember to always buy the camera from a renowned manufacturer that can provide full support for the device that it sells. This is very important especially for IP security cameras since they require certain programs in order to be monitored on a computer. If incompatibilities are present between the surveillance software and your computer´s operating system, then you might have a lot of trouble. Generally this can be avoided by buying products from serious brands that always test their items in order to make sure that the buyer will not experience any compatibility issues.

It is important not be influenced in your decision solely by the price factor, for even if you get a great deal now, in the long run a cheap product will show its flaws. When it comes to IP security cameras, “expensive” means that they have been tested. This also means that they have performed well for a long period of time. No major inconveniences will ever appear.

Consider a full digital upgrade

If you also own other private security devices, then you might also consider getting a full digital upgrade. The cost involved can represent an issue, but you have to consider that the technological leaps, being so big, leaves all equipment that is older than a few years flawed in many areas, according to the current standards. That means also flaws in security, which can be speculated by ingenious burglars. Money spent in improving the security of yourself and of your family is money well spent that offers in return enough peace of mind to make it well worth it.

Keep in mind the most important specifications above mentioned when thinking of buying a new, full IP security camera, and you will manage to get a product that fully suits your needs. Do not make any major compromises as you will in the end come to regret them, and do not, by any chance, consider that by tweaking your old surveillance system you will get away cheaper. In this case new is always better, and once you get your hands on the new technologies you will think that too.

IP security camera´s specifications are not to be neglected, while the price should never be the reason for a compromise.
