Taking Prenatal Vitamins and Hair Growth

When you are pregnant, you are often urged to take prenatal vitamins.  These are health supplements that have key ingredients formulated for women who are pregnant.  They not only help the mom, but they help the baby as well.  Health is very important, especially at this stage where you are creating a life inside of you.

Prenatal vitamins do a lot of good for you and your baby.  They give nutrients that make sure that nothing in your own body is depleted while you are pregnant, such as bone density and blood oxygen.  There are other beneficial prenatal vitamin side effects that people often don't talk about.  One of the biggest is the fact that many pregnant women see a surge in hair growth when they are on these supplements.  They find that their hair is thicker and fuller than normal, which is a big draw for women who usually have thin, wispy hair.


The main reason why prenatal vitamin side effects create thick hair is because of the amount of folic acid in the product.  Folic acid is one of the three most important nutrients that you should look for in a prenatal vitamin.  The others are calcium and iron.  Folic acid is important because, without it, babies are more likely to be born with birth defects.  Because of this, you should make sure that you take a supplement that contains at least 800 micrograms of folic acid.

But that isn't the only benefit that folic acid has, apparently.  Besides giving your baby the kind of health needed in order to be born healthy, it also nourishes the cells in your scalp.  This nourishment can do wonders for your hair.  It speeds up hair growth.  It also makes your hair thicker and shinier.  Although it seems like it is the prenatal vitamin's doing, it is really the folic acid's fault.  If you aren't pregnant and you took a multivitamin that had enough of this nutrient, you would have similar results. 

Not all scientists agree that prenatal vitamins have this affect on women.  There isn't enough research to suggest this conclusion.  Still, many women have experienced the effects.  Although there isn't any basis in the medical community, there is an overwhelming flood of women to believe it to be real.  Keep both of these opinions in mind when deciding to take the prenatal vitamins. 

This shouldn't be the only reason that you use prenatal vitamins.  While a healthy head of hair is important and a great side effect, the main reason to use these supplements is to create a healthy environment for your unborn baby.  Also, some women don't receive these side effects.  This is the main reason why some scientists question whether prenatal vitamins have these side effects at all.  Still, there has been an overwhelming response from pregnant women when it comes to the hair benefits of prenatal vitamins.

Although it is great to have beautiful hair, there are other, more important benefits to taking good prenatal vitamins.  After all, the health of your baby is the most important thing when you are pregnant.  You want to make sure that your baby is born with the best health that you can possibly provide.  You also want to stay healthy through the experience as well.  Prenatal supplements can do this for you.  Just make sure that they have the right amount of folic acid, calcium and iron.  As mentioned above, the folic acid should be at least 800 micrograms.  The calcium should be at least 200 milligrams while the iron should be at around 30 milligrams.  With these levels, you will ensure that you both are very healthy in time for the birth.
