An online graduate degree is an academic degree that you earn all or partially by taking online classes. You go to graduate school to get a master’s degree, PHD, medical or law degree after you’ve already earned a bachelor’s degree in college. Many universities offer online courses but getting an online degree is taking that a step further. It means that all or almost all your class work is done online, over the computer.
Graduate school is largely a term used in North America. While technically the term can be used to reference advanced medical training, students enrolled in advanced medical programs are most often referred to as medical students, not graduate students. The same can be said for law school and law students, as well as, business school and business students. The schools of medicine, law, and business are generally thought of as professional degree programs. One of the reasons online graduate schools work so well is that a great deal of time and effort in graduate school goes to creating an original thesis or dissertation and then defending that body of work. This requires a great deal of original research and solitary writing which is normally accomplished in individual pursuits. There are plenty of options available in online graduate degree programs. The two traditional options are master’s and doctoral, or PHD degrees. There are many combined-degree and certification programs available as well. Master’s Graduate Degree ProgramsThere are master’s degree programs available in both professional and academic fields. These programs are ever-expanding and evolving. There are options like an MBA or Master of Business Administration, which are designed to allow students to advance within a specific field for employment or academic growth. Some master’s degree programs serve as a prerequisite to going onto a doctoral program. It will normally take students from one to three years to complete a master’s degree program depending on how much time they have to devote to their studies. Online programs generally will take longer, simply because students are usually working at the degree part-time instead of full-time. Doctorate ProgramsDoctoral degrees can be either professional or academic. These academic degrees are the highest you can go in any field. A professional doctoral degree, like a Doctor of Medicine, and the Juris Doctor or JD, will stress both the application of skills and knowledge. This means they have to have “hands-on” experience and practice in their fields and while there may be online courses that can be taken during their schooling, online degree programs for these professional fields do not offer a complete course of study.Academic Doctoral degrees, like a Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D, can take three to six years to finish if students have the time to commit to the program. Again, online doctoral degrees are often taken while the student works, has a family, and other demands on their time so the program may be spread out over a longer period of time. Doctoral degrees are focused on advancing an individual’s knowledge of their chosen academic specialty. Online Graduate School BasicsSometimes referred to as part of a “Distance Education Program” online graduate schools have certainly taken advantage of advancing technology. The digital age has revolutionized all of our live and this includes academia.Choosing online graduate school for course delivery offers unparalleled convenience, flexibility and definitely expands a student’s choices. Often students make the choice between a campus-based or online program based on their personal learning styles. Many individuals need the regularity of structured class schedules and the daily social interaction and feedback that a classroom setup offers. Others will be drawn to the online advantage of solitude and the ability to work at their own pace, versus the pace of a collective group. Online students will often be able to fit the studies into their life right now, versus having to wait to go back to school at some time in the future. Online graduate schools have taken advantage of sophisticated web-technologies. There are online graduate schools that have been able to create programs that allow face-to-face interaction over the Internet. Many online schools offer tools that allow students to work independently, yet also be part of an active online community. It is important to do your homework before choosing an online degree program. It is important to check out that the program is accredited and that any classes that are taken would transfer to any other schools. The ability to get an online graduate degree offers many students the chance to finish their schooling, pursue additional interests, or take classes from a distant school without having to move. |
